Summer STEAM Camp at Lewis University

March 29, 2021

After the Peanut is proud to announce that their Summer STEAM Camp for 2021 will be held at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois. The camp runs from June 7-August 13, 2021. It is open to students ages 9-17 years old. Parents can register their children at afterthepeanut.com/camp.

CEO of After the Peanut, Dr. Natalie Coleman knows firsthand the backseat STEAM had taken already in K-12 education and COVID-19 exacerbated the gap for many kids for hands-on, real-life and engaging STEAM opportunities. Summer STEAM Camp Director, Jill Krysinski know the camp will also lessen the opportunity gap, get kids active, excited about STEAM, and expose them to real college and career readiness opportunities. Having established a relationship with Lewis University through other projects to benefit the community, the partnership between After the Peanut and Lewis University to host a STEAM Camp on their campus was inevitable. Working over the past few years with Dr. Jeniffer Buntin who is the Director of the Center for Community Research & Education at Lewis University, Dr. Coleman knew this summer was the perfect time to grow their partnership. After getting the “green light” from the Provost Dr. Christopher Sindt, Dr. Buntin was thrilled that Lewis would be able to host the Summer STEAM Camp. Not only will Lewis University serve as the host site, Lewis University Robert Noyce scholarship recipients as well as other Lewis University students will be instructors and volunteers for the camp.

Summer STEAM Camp will offer a variety of STEAM activities over the course of 10 weeks. Parents can sign up for as many or few weeks as they like. Participants will have an opportunity for hands-on STEAM activities each week specifically tailored to their grade. Class sizes are limited to 10 participants, not just for COVID19 precautions, but because students are better engaged and grasp concepts more easily when in a small groups. Each instructor is a trained educator with a passion for STEAM and educating the next generation of leaders, thinkers and doers. Skill building in the areas of communication, collaborating and teamwork will be a natural part of our weekly sessions through challenging and supportive real life STEAM experiences. In addition to the hands-on activities, students will also be able to tour Lewis University, meet college students and professors, engage in sessions with STEAM mentors and participate in physical activities to keep their mind and body actively learning!
